RSS Feeds & You…

By Matt Richardson | December 10, 2007

Nearly every morning I wake up and one of the first things I do is check my RSS feeds, it’s great it gives me all the updated from my favorite blogs and websites. Sometimes I don’t know what I would do without them. With that being said I am amazed that there are still people out there that either don’t know what an RSS feed is, or just plain out don’t want to use them.

What is an RSS feed?

I’ll try to keep this brief for those who know what an RSS feed is already. For those who don’t, RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication”. So what does that mean to the average user?

Well my favorite way of explaining a RSS feed is attributing it to your friendly neighborhood paper boy (or girl) The good thing about RSS is that like the paper boy/girl, it brings all of your news or content to you, instead of having to go out and search for it. This can have some decent applications, but we will get a little more in that later.

Benefits of having an RSS feed

Well there are many benefits of having an RSS feed, on the consumer side it makes things MUCH easier for them bringing them any updates without them having to go out and hunt for them. On the provider’s side (your side), one of the big benefits of giving out your RSS feed is that it not only keeps your customers informed but it also keeps you and your content in front of them. One idea that I have been working with a few of my clients with is the thought of having all of your stock and current sales in an RSS feed, because as we all know if you have a strong customer base they will always want to keep in the loop about what you are doing or selling. With that being said

what do you do with your RSS feed?

[…] Sage is a great add-on that tracks your RSS and Atom feeds (in case you don’t know what RSS is read my simplified description). In general the best way that I can describe Sage, is that it’s a great lightweight RSS and Atom feed reader for Mozilla Firefox so you can get as the Sage team says “a lot of what you need and not much of what you don’t.” […]
