Internet explorer V. Firefox (Browser Wars!)
By Matt Richardson | March 17, 2008
Recently Microsoft released its latest version of Internet Explorer (IE. 8 is now in beta testing for developers). With the new release of IE8, Microsoft fixed a lot of problems/complaints with its browser and how it displays websites with CSS and HTML. Aside from the way that IE8 displays websites now, they did release a few other updates including some graphical tweaks and improvements and some functional updates, like the update to their phishing filter, and some new features like “Web Slices” and their “Activities”. Mozilla Firefox on the other hand released its newest version a while ago which included a similar phishing filter, improved tab browsing, and improved spell checking among other features. But which is better?Over all I guess better is simply a matter of opinion. In my opinion, I happen to think there are pros and cons on both sides, for example.
IE pros – Low system requirements, decent security (including phishing feature), Tab browsing, *new* crash recovery.
IE cons- Limited to Windows (no Linux or OSX support), Still fairly “buggy”, slightly a “memory hog”.
Firefox pros- Low system requirements, slightly more strict on displaying websites with CSS, extensions and themes, tab browsing, fully compatible with other operating systems.
Firefox cons- Slightly lesser known, not optimized for broad band connections out of the box…
Winner: For me, it’s Firefox, simply because it’s highly customizable and can emulate Internet Explorer through an extension, but before you automatically think that Firefox is the best around, please realize that there are other browsers to choose form. For example Opera is a nice outside contender in the browser wars, also there is Safari, which not too long ago was also released for Microsoft Windows, there is Flock, which is more of a “social media” browser, there is Song Bird, which is a web browser with a media player built in, and many more.
So, what is your favorite browser?
