Conference etiquette and you…
By Matt Richardson | April 8, 2008
I have been to a number of conferences and conventions in the past, both with clients and independently, and every time I get a mix of people along with a mix of meetings. With the mix, I always get the typical combination of etiquette and the lack there of.
Typically I have the following rules of etiquette when I attend a conference…
- Don’t booze it up-
Most conferences that I have been to have alcohol readily available. I have always been an advocate of not partaking at work, but should you choose to partake, drink responsibly, stay in control. - Dress appropriately-
I know that there is not really a standard dress code when it comes to conferences, but remember you are representing not only your company, but also yourself. Dress appropriately. - Mind your mouth-
Some times there is a time and a place for some of those choice words one might use, but not everyone wants to hear them, some things are better kept to one’s self. Watch out what you might say could offend some one. - Know the reason you are there-
This should be fairly strait forward, but some people don’t realize that they are there for business. With that being said don’t be afraid to mingle and have a little fun, I always see conferences as a networking opportunity. - Above all, follow the “Golden Rule”-
“Treat others as you would like to be treated” This should also be obvious. I actually try to keep this in mind with every thing that I do, not just in conferences, but in all circumstances. It’s simple.
What do you do at conferences ?
